Southern Nazarene University issued the following announcement.
Southern Nazarene University is pleased to announce a $30,000 grant from the Kirkpatrick Foundation in support of the Illuminating Creativity project, which provides expanded display capability for the SNU Maker Space facility and supports art demonstrations and shows featuring contemporary artists in a variety of media. The project will involve budding artists and art teachers in hands-on creation, promoting personal engagement with the arts through a variety of mediums among audiences of different ages.
The expanded and diversified display areas for projects created in SNU's Parker Fine Arts Building interdisciplinary Maker Space will include flexible gallery display space accommodating a variety of art pieces and video projection featuring detailed techniques, closeups of artists' off-site pieces, and in-depth artist interviews.
“We are thrilled to be awarded this grant from the Kirkpatrick Foundation that will allow new opportunities of discovery and experiential learning not only for SNU students, but for the community also,” said Phyllis Eagle, SNU Graphic Design department chair.
The gallery display will be used for shows associated with the workshop series as well as annual displays of SNU student work for serigraphy, letter press, and the Senior Graphic Design Show, which includes multiple mediums and sizes of projects.
“We have a long history of supporting the arts programs at SNU, “ said Louisa McCune, executive director of Kirkpatrick Foundation. “We are always inspired by their forward-thinking creative programs and the caliber of their teaching staff. Maker spaces are at a premium these days, and to see SNU lead the way is very encouraging. Plus, the world needs more design thinking to solve its problems large and small. This new maker space will yield that kind of solutions-driven creativity.”
SNU’s Maker Space located in the Graphic Design department in the Parker Fine Arts building provides a creative and interdisciplinary production space configured to allow cross-purpose uses for exhibits, instruction, and workshops. The Maker Space supports both collaborative and personal projects in the arts and STEAM areas. Specialized equipment supports 3D printing, modeling, silkscreen, photography, and digital printing capabilities.
The SNU Maker Space is an extension of Southern Nazarene University (SNU) Department of Graphic Design. SNU's Graphic Design program, which focuses on understanding the design process from concept to final product, helps students hone in on and develop their personal design aesthetic based on their individual strengths, and features personal, individual attention throughout the program and provides a variety of internship opportunities.
