City of Plainview issued the following announcement on May 28.
Each June, the Library sponsors the Summer Reading Club for children who completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Last year the program was expanded to include programming for teens and adults. This year, the emphasis will be mostly on reading and any programming will be virtual.
“We were going to change things up this summer anyway, mainly in the area of programming,” says Chief Librarian, Cynthia Peterson. “Now we will be making even more drastic changes – but the emphasis on reading will not change. In fact, it should be an even more important part of the program.”
One of the changes will be the Reading Challenge. The reading challenge will begin on Monday, June 1st through Thursday, July 31st and will be based on the time spent reading, not the number of books read.
“Our emphasis is to encourage reading of any type – books, e-books, magazines, newspapers as well as audio books,” says Peterson. “We would like to see every participant read at least the minimum amount of time for their specific age group.”
Minimum amount of time for each category is Kindergarten through 3rd grade - 15 minutes daily, grades 3rd – 6th – 30 minutes daily, grades 6th – 8th - 45 minutes daily and grades 9th -12th – 60 minutes daily. Third (3rd) and Sixth (6th) graders are welcome to participate in one of two different groups depending on their individual reading skills and interests. Adults should read a minimum of 90 minutes per day.
Participants are encouraged to sign up for the program by calling 296.1148 or visiting the Library page at www.plainviewtx.org/library. Once the submission form is completed, an email invitation for the ReaderZone app will be sent to track reading minutes and statistics. Those not wanting to download the app may obtain paper logs from the library.
Also, the library will have programming events online when possible. This includes two programs by the Science Spectrum in Lubbock.
“We just found out that they will be able to do programming for us virtually,” said Peterson. “We will develop some of the other programming in-house.”
In addition to the virtual programming and the reading challenge, participants may enter one of two contests; an art contest for the best representation of fairy tales, myths, and fantasy and a writing contest based on the same categories.
Deadline to submit artwork and stories is Thursday, July 31st by end of day and submissions are welcome any time up to the 31st. Prizes will be awarded in early August for the artwork, stories, and the reading challenge. Participants who have met the minimum requirements for their challenge group will also receive certificates.
Registration for the Summer Reading Club is available at www.plainviewtx.org/library or by calling 806-296-1149. All residents of Plainview and greater Hale County are welcome.
