CITY OF PLAINVIEW: Conrad Lofts - TDA Winner

City of Plainview issued the following announcement.

Conrad Lofts was named winner of the Best Renovation/Rehabilitation/Restoration Category under 50k population.  The Texas Downtown Association (TDA) sponsors the annual program to recognize outstanding projects, places, and people of Texas.

Now known as Conrad Lofts, the building is the undisputed fifth Hilton Hotel built by Conrad Hilton and opened on July 3, 1929.The premiere hotel for its day, it remained open as a hotel and then apartment building before closing its doors in 1983. More than 30 years later, a group of volunteers brought attention to the project and MRE Capital purchased the building. Using state and federal tax credits, they were able to restore the building to an apartment complex with more than 25 units and keep many of the architectural details of the building including the lobby, ballroom and outside.

TDA was established in 1985 to connect and serve communities that are committed to downtown vitality.  The organization is an independent, statewide nonprofit that represents cities and towns of all sizes, economic development corporations, chambers of commerce, local organizations, small businesses, and individuals. 

“We are so proud to showcase the rehabilitation of Conrad Lofts,” said Plainview Main Street Manager Melinda Brown. “The rehab was a community effort along with MRE Capital and we are excited to see it receive state-wide recognition through the TDA Awards program.”

One hundred and four entries were submitted in ten different categories from communities across the state. Due to the number of entries, the entries were divided up into two categories – Design and Achievement – with separate expert professionals serving as judging panels for each group. 

Design Panel: Bill Hidell, Hidell and Associates Architects; David Newman, MESA Design Group; Marie Oehlerking-Read, Komatsu Architecture; Lynn Osgood, Civic Arts; and Chance Sparks, Freese & Nichols, Inc. and APA-Texas Chapter President.  

Winners were announced in a series of virtual live Facebook Videos release throughout the week of October 27th to kick-off the virtual 2020 Texas Downtown Conference scheduled November 9-12.
